How Barringtons all started….
As of this year 2016, the Barringtons family has been in business over 60 years. That’s 60 years of excitable brides, nervous grooms, proud fathers, and bridesmaids regretting that last glass of champagne! Sixty years of memories for the Barringtons to look back on. So, how did Barringtons Wedding Cars begin?
My mother bought a black limousine in a car auction in 1956, and wondered what to do with it – it was a bit extravagant for the school run!
She had the bright idea of approaching all the local funeral directors (there would always be a steady stream of business…) They hired the car, so she bought a couple more.
Wanting to expand, she not only opened a shop in Walton village, it now doubled as wedding car hire as well as taxi hire. At one point they had a contract to ferry the Beatles around in their early days and the driver always moaned about these young kids he had to pick up…!
The beginning of the wedding car company….
When my brother became unemployed, Mum suggested starting a wedding car business. By then the other side of the business mainly focused on funerals. He bought a burgundy Rolls Royce, had it sprayed white, and bought premises in Bootle where we continue to operate from today.
During the 80’s yuppie era he had over 20 vintage and classic wedding cars, all white Mercedes or Rolls Royces, with some princess limousines. He also provided cars for many Liverpool and Everton players, as well as the drummer from Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
The wedding car business became mine….
Then in 1998, after 20 years, he took over the funeral side and I bought him out so he could focus on the funerals.
I now owned the cars, yard, and showroom as well as the adjoining house which I moved into. At the beginning we had vintage cars which had limitations on how far they could travel, so after a few years I bought a kit car – the Badsworth Landaulette. I also built another one – the Royale Windsor – both of which I still have. We have since added two Imperial Viscount vintage wedding cars. The matching vehicles to these that we use are Daimler limousines that can carry seven passengers.
As you can tell, petrol is practically the Barringtons lifeblood.
